The Door at the End of the Hall

When Sarah inherited her grandmother's house, she expected dust, old furniture, and memories.

She did not expect the locked door.

The house stood alone at the edge of a dense forest. It was larger than she remembered, with endless hallways and rooms that seemed darker than they should have been.

On her first night there, she noticed a narrow hallway she had never seen before.

At the end stood a black wooden door.

It had no handle.

No keyhole.

Nothing.

Just a small note nailed to its center.

DO NOT OPEN.

Sarah laughed.

Her grandmother had always loved practical jokes.

The next morning, the door was gone.

The hallway ended in a blank wall.

She convinced herself she had dreamed it.

But the following night, she heard something.

Three knocks.

From inside the wall.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

Sarah froze.

The sound came from exactly where the mysterious door had been.

She pressed her ear against the wallpaper.

A voice whispered from the other side.

"Let me out."

She jumped back.

The voice sounded like her own.

Over the next week the knocking continued.

Always at 3:13 a.m.

Always three knocks.

Always the same whisper.

"Let me out."

Sleep became impossible.

Dark circles formed beneath her eyes.

One night she finally tore the wallpaper away.

Beneath it was the black door.

Waiting.

As though it had always been there.

The note remained.

DO NOT OPEN.

But beneath the words someone had scratched another message.

IT KNOWS YOUR NAME.

Sarah's hands trembled.

Then the voice spoke again.

Not through the wall.

Directly behind the door.

"Sarah."

The knobless door slowly creaked open by itself.

Beyond it was darkness.

Not a room.

Not a hallway.

A void.

And standing inside was Sarah.

Or something wearing her face.

Its smile stretched too wide.

Its eyes were completely black.

It stepped forward.

"I've been trapped here for so long," it said.

Sarah stumbled backward.

"What are you?"

The creature tilted its head.

"The better question is..."

It smiled wider.

"...what are you?"

Before she could run, the thing lunged.

The house shook.

The lights exploded.

And everything went black.

The next morning, neighbors saw Sarah leaving the house carrying boxes.

She smiled and waved.

She looked perfectly normal.

Almost.

Except for one thing.

When she passed a mirror in the hallway, her reflection didn't move.

It simply stood there.

Watching her leave.

And smiling.
