1. The Dare
It was late October, the kind of cold that made the air feel thin. Aria, Mason, Tyler, and Juno stood outside the chain‑link fence, staring at the hulking silhouette of Briarwood. The windows were black, like empty eye sockets. The roof sagged. The playground was nothing but twisted metal.
“Last one in is a coward,” Mason said, smirking as he pushed open a gap in the fence.
Tyler swallowed hard. “People say the school hunts you. Like… it moves.”
Aria rolled her eyes. “Buildings don’t move. Ghosts don’t hunt. It’s just a creepy old school.”
But Juno didn’t say anything. She kept staring at the building, her breath fogging in the cold air. She felt something watching them.
They stepped inside.
2. The First Sign
The moment they crossed the threshold, the temperature dropped. Their flashlights flickered, beams slicing through dust and darkness. The hallway stretched unnaturally long, lockers dented and peeling.
Tyler kicked a loose tile. “See? Just a dump.”
Then the lockers slammed shut—every single one—echoing down the hall like a gunshot.
Aria jumped. “Okay… that wasn’t the wind.”
Juno whispered, “We should leave.”
But the front doors were already gone.
Where the entrance had been was now a solid wall of cracked plaster.
The school had shifted.
3. The Voice in the Intercom
They ran down the hallway, panic rising. The lights overhead buzzed to life, flickering in sickly yellow pulses. The intercom crackled.
A distorted voice whispered through the speakers:
“Attendance… required…”
Mason froze. “Did you hear that?”
The voice grew louder, warping, stretching, becoming something inhuman.
“All students… report to class…”
The hallway lights shut off one by one, chasing them with darkness.
They sprinted.
4. The Classroom
They burst into a classroom and slammed the door behind them. Desks were overturned, papers scattered, chalk dust thick in the air. A single message was written on the board:
NO ONE LEAVES UNTIL THE LESSON IS COMPLETE
Tyler backed away. “What lesson?”
The door locked itself.
The overhead projector flickered on, displaying grainy footage of children sitting in the same classroom—children from decades ago. Their faces were pale, eyes hollow.
Aria whispered, “What happened to them?”
The children in the footage turned toward the camera, mouths opening in silent screams.
Then the projector shut off.
Something scraped across the ceiling.
5. The Teacher
A tall, thin figure dropped from the ceiling tiles, landing silently behind the desks. Its limbs were too long, joints bending wrong. Its face was a cracked porcelain mask shaped like a teacher’s smile.
It pointed at them with a ruler.
“Sit.”
None of them moved.
The mask cracked wider.
“SIT.”
The desks slid across the floor, forcing them into seats. The creature glided to the chalkboard, writing with jagged strokes:
LESSON ONE: OBEDIENCE
Mason stood, shaking. “We’re not staying here.”
The creature’s head snapped toward him.
It appeared beside Mason in an instant.
The ruler slashed.
Mason fell, clutching his arm as blood soaked his sleeve.
The creature leaned close, whispering through its mask:
“Disobedient children are punished.”
6. The Hunt Begins
Tyler grabbed Mason, pulling him toward the door. Aria kicked the lock until it snapped. They fled into the hallway.
The intercom shrieked.
“Students out of class… will be hunted.”
The lights went red.
The school shifted again—hallways twisting, doors vanishing, staircases leading nowhere. The building was alive, rearranging itself to trap them.
Juno pointed. “The gym! Maybe there’s an exit.”
They ran.
Behind them, the teacher’s footsteps echoed—slow, deliberate, impossibly loud.
7. The Gymnasium
The gym was massive, shadows stretching across the floor. Basketball hoops hung crooked. Bleachers creaked.
Tyler spotted an emergency exit. “There!”
They sprinted toward it.
The exit door slid upward like a mouth closing.
The floor beneath them rippled.
Aria screamed as the gym floor split open, revealing a dark pit filled with broken desks, torn backpacks, and bones.
The school had eaten students before.
Tyler grabbed Aria before she slipped in. “We need another way!”
Juno pointed to the rafters. “Climb!”
They scrambled up the bleachers and onto the metal beams overhead.
The teacher entered the gym, head tilted back, scanning the rafters.
It began climbing the wall like a spider.
8. The Final Lesson
They crawled across the rafters toward a ventilation grate. Mason pried it open with shaking hands.
“Go!” he whispered.
One by one they slipped inside.
The teacher lunged, grabbing Mason’s leg.
He screamed.
Aria and Tyler pulled him, Juno kicking the creature’s mask. It cracked, revealing darkness underneath—no face, no eyes, just a void.
The creature hissed.
They yanked Mason free and crawled through the vents, the metal groaning beneath them.
The intercom whispered:
“Final lesson… graduation…”
9. The Exit
The vent dropped them into the principal’s office. Papers were scattered everywhere, and the windows were boarded shut.
But the door was unlocked.
They ran into the hallway—now short, straight, normal.
The front doors were back.
They burst outside, collapsing on the grass as the school groaned behind them, shifting back into its original shape.
The intercom whispered one last time:
“Class dismissed…”
10. Aftermath
The four never spoke of what happened. Mason’s arm healed, but the scars never faded. Juno refused to walk near any school building again. Tyler slept with the lights on. Aria kept hearing lockers slam in her dreams.
Briarwood Intermediate was fenced off permanently.
But sometimes, late at night, people swear they hear the intercom crackling through the broken windows.
Calling for attendance.
Waiting for students.
Hunting for anyone who dares return.
