The Moonlit Widow

A cold wind swept through the ancient village of Evermoor as midnight approached. Above the crooked rooftops, a pale moon hung like a silver eye watching the world below.

At the highest point of the village stood a forgotten mansion known as Hollowmere House. Its black stone walls were draped in ivy, and its windows reflected nothing but darkness. The villagers feared the place. They claimed that every full moon, a woman dressed in black appeared on the balcony, gazing toward the cemetery beyond the hills.

No one dared to approach.

One stormy evening, a young writer named Victor arrived in Evermoor searching for inspiration. Fascinated by the legend, he ignored the villagers' warnings and climbed the winding path to Hollowmere House.

The iron gate creaked open by itself.

Inside, dust covered the grand halls. Torn velvet curtains hung from towering windows, and candle chandeliers swayed although there was no breeze.

As the clock struck midnight, Victor heard footsteps.

Slow.

Elegant.

Approaching from the darkness.

Standing at the top of the staircase was a woman of breathtaking beauty. Her long black gown flowed like liquid shadow across the marble floor. Dark curls framed her pale face, and her eyes glimmered with sadness older than time itself.

"Why have you come here?" she asked.

Victor struggled to speak.

"I wanted to know the truth."

The woman smiled sadly.

"The truth is far more tragic than the stories."

She led him through the mansion to a hidden chamber where a single portrait hung upon the wall. It showed the same woman standing beside a handsome young nobleman.

"My name was Lady Eleanor Ashcroft," she whispered. "Two hundred years ago, I lived here with the man I loved."

As rain battered the windows, she revealed her tale.

On the night of their wedding, Eleanor's fiancé disappeared without a trace. Believing he had abandoned her, she spent years waiting for his return. Eventually grief consumed her, and she died alone within the mansion.

But years later the truth emerged.

Her beloved had never abandoned her.

He had been murdered by a jealous rival and buried in an unmarked grave beneath the cemetery.

The revelation came too late.

Eleanor's broken heart chained her spirit to Hollowmere House.

For two centuries she wandered its halls beneath the moonlight, unable to find peace.

Tears shimmered in her eyes.

"I have waited for someone to learn the truth."

Victor promised he would.

The next morning he searched the cemetery and discovered the forgotten grave hidden beneath tangled roots and moss-covered stone. There he found evidence confirming the old murder.

The story spread throughout Evermoor.

For the first time in two hundred years, Lady Eleanor's name was cleared, and her lost love was finally honored.

That night the villagers looked toward Hollowmere House.

A single light glowed from the highest balcony.

Then it vanished.

Forever.

The mansion has stood empty ever since.

Yet on quiet nights, when the moon shines through the mist, black roses bloom around the old gate—silent reminders of a love that endured beyond death itself.
